‘Has to take the blame’, ‘Baffles me’ – Many Sheffield Wednesday fans point finger after frustrating Derby result

Sheffield Wednesday concede a late equaliser from the penalty spot to slip to a frustrating draw with Derby County last night and many fans of the Yorkshire club feel manager Garry Monk is partially to blame.

Wednesday dominated for long periods of the game and deservedly took the lead after 23 minutes through top scorer Steven Fletcher, who found the bottom corner after Barry Bannan’s pass.

However, the Owls failed to extend the deficit after that point and were made to pay inside the last 10 minutes when Chris Martin equalised with a spot-kick after Jack Marriott went down inside the box under the challenge of Moses Odubajo.

The result sees Wednesday slide down the table and move one point back from the top six.

Monk started with Fletcher upfront with Jordan Rhodes but brought both strikers off within 7 minutes of each other, in a move that appeared to invite Derby pressure.

The Owls have had issues with conceding late goals and throwing away points in the Championship this season.

It appears many Wednesday fans believe Monk’s poor decision making, particularly in bringing off Rhodes and Fletcher, led to the side suffering that same fate against the Rams at Pride Park last night, with many of them taking to Twitter to criticise him.
