‘Has to start regularly’, ‘Excellent’ – Many Sunderland fans rave about one man’s performance in Lee Johnson’s first win

Sunderland beat Oldham Athletic 2-1 last night to claim their first win under new boss Lee Johnson and many fans have been raving about the performance of 20-year-old Jack Diamond.
Johnson was appointed on Saturday ahead of the League One game against Wigan and saw his side narrowly beaten but his search for a first win did not go on too long.
The Black Cats took on Oldham Athletic, one of their new manager’s former clubs, in the Papa John’s Trophy last night and came back from one down to claim a 2-1 victory that secured their place in the last 16 of the competition.
Bobby Grant put the hosts ahead at Boundary Park but Chris Maguire’s goal ensured the scores were level at the break and then Josh Scowen nodded in the winner just after the hour mark.
He wasn’t on the scoresheet but the performance of Diamond, a young academy product, turned some heads as he started for the fourth consecutive time in the competition.
The 20-year-old proved a nuisance to Oldham on the right-wing and showed glimpses of why many Sunderland fans are so excited by him.
The winger made his debut in the Papa John’s Trophy back in 2017/18 and after spending last season on loan with Harrogate Town has been on the fringes of the first team in the first few months of the season, so he’ll no doubt be hoping for more chances now Johnson is in charge.
Which club did Sunderland sign each of these 25 players from?
Diamond certainly seems to have impressed Black Cats supporters, with many taking to Twitter to rave about his performance in last night’s win.

Despite poor start, deserved win. Diamond standout and maybe should start at weekend, Grigg put in shift, Patterson stakes good claim and LJ making impact, positive subs and clear attacking intent. Good signs, real statement if we win at Lincoln this weekend. #SAFC #HawayTheLads https://t.co/BUsaxjITwO

Back to winning ways. Diamond a real threat. Also thought Grigg did well. Long way to go but improvement. #safc

Good win! Diamond has to start regularly for me. I thought Grigg actually played well. Hopefully this win breeds confidence and we go again in the league on Saturday #safc 🔴⚪️

Josh Scowen and Jack Diamond both brilliant tonight.
Who would have thought if you play players in their natural positions they do well? #SAFC

The Lee Johnson era is up and running. A decent performance, with some very good individual performances (Jack Diamond was excellent). Now back to the league, and we’ve got to find a major upturn in form. Tonight is a good start. #SAFC 🔴⚪️

Don't even think we started badly but the midfield pressing for their goal was pathetic – we let him shoot. Thought we grew after that though. Diamond & Grigg have been very good. Nice to see us playing on the front foot, with crossing that isn't predictable, for a change. #safc
