Many Sheffield Wednesday supporters have been calling for Garry Monk to give Alex Hunt more first team chances, following the Owls’ 1-0 defeat at home to Manchester City in the FA Cup on Wednesday night.

Monk selected Hunt to start from the bench against Manchester City, with Barry Bannan, Joey Pelupessy and Kieran Lee starting at the heart of their midfield, but the 19-year-old was brought onto the field for the final half an hour of the game in place of Lee, giving him the chance to stake a claim for more first team minutes.

The midfielder managed to slot seamlessly into the heart of the Owls’ midfield and showed that he is full of confidence and belief in his own ability, with Hunt not afraid to take up possession and look to make things happen for Monk’s side as they chased a potential equaliser.

Hunt was able to demonstrate the potential creativity that he could bring to Sheffield Wednesday, with the midfielder almost setting up Steven Fletcher for an equaliser following his dangerous ball across midfield just missing the striker’s outstretched boot, in what was a real near miss for the Owls.

Considering that Sheffield Wednesday have been struggling in the Championship in recent weeks, Hunt could be the sort of player they need to come in and provide a confident presence in the middle of the pitch, and he certainly did his first team prospects no harm with his display against the Premier League champions.
