Nottingham Forest will be targeting a serious push for a top-six finish this season, after a frustrating start to the new league campaign in the Championship.

One player that will be hoping to play his part this season is Sammy Ameobi, with the winger looking to build on some impressive performances during last season for the Reds.

Football League World's Nottingham Forest fan Ethan Lamb issued his thoughts on Ameobi's time with the club to date, and looked back on his tricky start to life at the City Ground.

"It is safe to say that many Forest fans were underwhelmed when the club announced the signing of Sammy Ameobi from Bolton back in June 2019.

"It wasn’t all plain sailing for Ameobi who endured a tough period from November through to February. He struggled to make an impact on the game and was often substituted in games before the 70-minute mark. He also came under fire from many fans for being “lazy” and “one dimensional” which led to fans calling for a replacement in the January transfer window."

The Forest supporter looked back on a memorable match involving Leeds United last season, and labelled the winger's performance against Marcelo Bielsa's side as 'incredible'.

"However, Lamouchi had faith in the winger and that paid off in the 2-0 home win over eventual champions Leeds United. Ameobi scored a thunderbolt from the edge of the 18-yard box that wrong footed Kiko Casilla, sending The Reds on the path to a crucial victory.

"Ameobi’s display was incredible that night. His work rate and defensive display was immense and was well worth the Man of the Match award."

Ameobi has struggled for consistent minutes with Nottingham Forest this season though, with Chris Hughton's side currently sat 20th in the Championship table after their opening 11 matches of this year's campaign.

"This season has been more of a rotation role for Ameobi after the arrival of Anthony Knockaert from Fulham. This season, he’s scored just the one goal and that was off the bench against Rotherham United. He will be hoping to be pushing for more starts but will face serious competition in the form of Knockaert and Joe Lolley.

"Despite featuring less so far this season, Ameobi remains a major asset to the club. He adds flair to the Forest front line and also a different option with him not being your typical small and nimble winger.

"Overall, Sammy Ameobi has been a good addition for Forest and proves to this day to be a good impact sub. Last season he showed glimpses of his quality, but just needs to be more consistent in order to nail a starting place this season. Over his time at the club it is safe to say he has proved the doubters wrong!"

Ameobi and his Nottingham Forest team-mates are set to return to action after the international break when they take on Barnsley, in what is likely to be a tricky test against the Tykes at Oakwell.
