Leeds United secured a massive deal for young 17-year-old striker Jack Clarke yesterday, as the youngster put pen to paper to seal his first professional contract at Elland Road.

The 17-year-old is one of the most exciting prospects emerging from the Yorkshire outfit's academy, with the forward putting in a number of superb displays for the under-18's and under-23's.

The Leeds United academy is renowned for producing some of the best talent in football, with an array of top stars emerging from the club's prestigious set-up, and you get the impression that Clarke could be the next big thing to emerge from the conveyor belt of talent at Elland Road.

Leeds have been linked with another hot prospect from rival side Sheffield Wednesday in the last few months, with the side keen on a move for young striker George Hirst.

The Whites have reportedly had an approach for the Owls talent turned down, but they supposedly remain keen with Hirst set to depart Hillsborough in the summer.

However, it begs the question, do Leeds really need to sign him now?

Surely Leeds should prioritise developing and maturing their own home-grown talent and save their money.

Clarke has the potential to go far in the game, and Leeds is the perfect platform for him to grow as a player and become a frequent first-team starter - the addition of Hirst would ultimately give him direct competition, and potentially less first-team minutes.

This deal for Clarke surely ends Leeds' pursuit of Hirst?
