Having had previous loan spells in the EFL, this summer, Aston Villa decided it was time to test Kaine Kesler-Hayden at Championship level.

Linking up with Huddersfield Town back in August, the plan would have been for the 20-year-old to get plenty of game time under his belt.

However, despite a promising start, that hasn't really been the case so far.

Kesler-Hayden did start four of the club's first five league matches under Danny Schofield, but, with Schofield eventually relieved of his duties as Terriers manager, this directly had a negative impact on the Aston Villa loanees chances of game time.

Indeed, in Fotheringham's first nine matches in charge, the 20-year-old featured just once in a nine minute cameo, making the bench on one other occasion, but missing out on the squad entirely for the other matches.

Naturally, that led to some speculation that Aston Villa could cut his loan deal short in January.

With a long term injury to Ollie Turton prior to the World Cup break, though, Kesler-Hayden was brought back into the fold, featuring twice in the Terriers two matches before the Championship paused.

Has Kaine Kesler-Hayden got a future at Aston Villa?

Honestly, it is incredibly tough to answer this question definitively either way.

Until this season, the youngster seemed to be progressing through the ranks well, going from League Two, to League One, to the Championship.

It appears now, though, that Mark Fotheringham just does not fancy the youngster and as such, it could well be that his loan deal at the John Smith's Stadium gets cut short in January.

On the surface of things, it seems easy to suggest that if he can't get into the Huddersfield team, he isn't good enough for Aston Villa, however, sometimes loans just do not work out.

I think before being written off as a Villa prospect, Kesler-Hayden deserves the chance to try and  prove himself elsewhere at this level.

That could come in January if indeed Aston Villa decide his future lays away from Huddersfield after how things have gone so far.

There is every chance with Ollie Turton's injury, though, that Kesler-Hayden features more at the John Smith's Stadium when Championship action gets back underway.
