Charlton Athletic's Conor Gallagher scored his fourth goal of the season against Fulham on Saturday, and Lee Bowyer has said the 19-year-old midfielder will ‘surprise anyone’.

Gallagher arrived at The Valley in the summer from Chelsea, signing a season-long loan with Lee Bowyer’s newly promoted Charlton.

He netted the opener for the Addicks at the weekend, where his team were held to a 2-2 drew at Craven Cottage.

Speaking about Gallagher after the game, Bowyer said via the News Shopper:

“Conor isn’t bad, not a bad player! Has he surprised me? He’s scored five goals, one every two games, for a 19-year-old kid who’s never played men’s football before, he’ll surprise anyone!”

Head of recruitment at Charlton Steve Gallen spotted Gallagher, Chelsea’s Youth Player of the Year last season, and brought him to The Valley for his first taste of first-team football.

He’s since repaid the faith shown in him, with four goals from ten games for Charlton so far this season.

The verdict

Gallagher has come from a club with a reputation for producing youth to a club with a reputation for developing it.

Bowyer gave the likes of Josh Cullen and Joe Aribo among other their first-team debuts last season, and has made Championship-level players out of them already.

Gallagher looks a real prospect and he should go on to have a successful start to his first-team career at Charlton this season.
