Leeds United have made an encouraging start to the 2019/20 campaign under manager Marcelo Bielsa.
After narrowly missing out on promotion last season, the Whites currently sit third in the Championship standings and will be looking to go one better next May.
If they are to bring an end to their hiatus from the Premier League, they will undoubtedly have to lean on the talents of Mateusz Klich.
Utterly superb during the previous campaign, the Poland international emerged as a key player for the Whites as he provided 19 goal contributions in all competitions.
When you consider just how impressive Klich was, it is not at all surprising that Bielsa is looking to extend the midfielder’s stay.
According to TEAMtalk, Leeds are close to agreeing fresh terms with the 29-year-old after rewarding Kalvin Phillips with a new deal earlier this week.
So is it a good move that Leeds are looking tie-down Klich to a new contract?
“Klich has been a revelation since signing for the club.
“He could go onto to be one of Leeds’ most influential players, should the club get promoted to the Premier League.
“He definitely deserves a new deal, and has been brilliant in terms of chance creation and adding assists and goals to this Leeds side.
“Since Bielsa came in, he’s been arguably Leeds’ best player in terms of quality of football, not necessarily their most important but in terms of as a footballer he’s one of the best in the league.”
“Absolutely, I can’t see why not.
“I thought he was the standout performer last season, a player reborn under Bielsa.
“He’s appeared regularly this season as well and is a fixture in the Poland international side; why would Leeds not want to give him a new contract?
“I suppose being 29 it will be the last substantial deal he gets and there must be a question mark over whether or not he’s going to be able to cut it if they go up, but he’s a solid first team regular now.
“I suppose the decision will rest on whether or not they go up, but on current form I’d give Klich a new deal all day long.”
“It’s only a matter of time before he is offered a new contract.
“Klich has been a regular in the Leeds side under Marcelo Bielsa, and seems to be getting better and better as his time at Elland Road progresses.
“He’s likely to be one of the first names on the team sheet for the Whites, and is a strong option to have in the squad with his defensive and attacking attributes.
“The Polish international hasn’t been at his best this season, but if you’re looking forward to Leeds potentially playing in the Premier League next season, then Klich is a player that their team should be built around.
“It should be a no-brainer for Leeds to offer him a new deal in the near future.”
