Manchester United loaned out winger Amad Diallo to Sunderland for the 2022-23 season.

The Ivory Coast international began his career at the Boca Barco academy in Italy in 2015 before moving to Atlanta in 2017 and joining their youth team setup.

The 20-year-old spent a few years playing for Atalanta’s academy teams in their league and the UEFA Youth League.

However, in October 2020, it came as a surprise to many when Manchester United agreed a fee with the Italian side to sign Diallo for a fee that could rise to £37.3 million. The youngster didn’t officially arrive at Old Trafford until January 2021.

Diallo spent the next year at United, but only featured on a handful of occasions as he looked to adapt to English football. The winger then spent the second half of last season on loan at Rangers, and before this summer on deadline day, United sent Diallo on loan to Sunderland.

This is Diallo’s first taste of Championship football, with the winger featuring 13 times so far this season and already having three goals and one assist to his name.

Still being just 20 years old and inexperienced in England, it took Diallo a bit to adapt to England’s second tier, with his first four games for Sunderland coming from the bench.

Forward than on to a couple of months, where the winger has completed 90 minutes on four out of the last five matches before the World Cup break. The Man United loanee has started to find his feet on Wearside, with the winger averaging 1.5 shots per game, according to WhoScored.com.

Diallo is also averaging 0.6 dribbles per game, which is leading the 20-year-old to be fouled on a regular basis; 1.2 times per 90 minutes, Diallo is being brought down.

Diallo’s Sunderland manager, Tony Mowbray, recently spoke to the press about the winger's progression while on Wearside.

Mowbray said, via the Metro: “I think he got wrapped up in the game on Saturday (against Luton) emotionally and that was good to see. With his physical data, he was top in every aspect from distance covered to number of high-speed sprints, he was amazingly athletic as well as showing his talent.

“That bodes well for us and also accelerates him in my mind in terms of him being a starting player for us, beyond a young lad who I can bring off the bench.

“I’m hoping that over time that’s what happens with the other young lads, as well. At the moment they’re still feeling their way in, but with Amad – and maybe it’s because he’s had more game time – he’s in front and he looks to me like a first-team starter. They bring different qualities. Amad is dynamic and explosive.”

Diallo still has a contract at United until the summer of 2025 but will see out the remainder of this campaign on loan at Sunderland. United will want the winger to get a full season of English football under his belt to help him in his adaptation to the game, but there are still question marks on what happens next.

At Old Trafford, there are players like Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Anthony Martial that are all ahead of Diallo, and at his age, United won’t want him to come back just to sit on the bench. Also, Erik ten Hag has yet to see a whole lot of Diallo, so this season is an opportunity for the winger to really show his new manager what he is all about and why big money was spent on him in the first place.
