Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is weighing up a £20 million bid for Stoke City forward Tyrese Campbell, according to The Sun

The report claims that Howe is willing to spend £20 million to prize him away from the Championship club.

But would he be a good signing? And is he worth the money?

Yes.

At 21, with a contract running until the summer of 2024, Stoke City are in a very strong position on this one. There is the added premium that Newcastle are a Premier League club and have recently taken on added investment.

It would be a smart addition for the Magpies but possibly not one that suits the severity of their situation in the relegation zone at the moment. Eddie Howe looking to the longer term is definitely positive, bringing in players who, if worst comes to worst, can play a key role in firing them back up in the Championship next season.

Campbell has shown in flashes that he has ability far higher than the second tier and therefore it would be a smart investment from the Magpies in January. He is worth that kind of money.

Tyrese Campbell is a hugely promising player - but which transfer strategy they decide to adopt will depend on how good of a signing this will be.

If they are going to spend a huge amount of money to compete for European football, this might be a signing they need to leave off their list, because there's little chance of him starting regularly straight away, something that would hugely hinder his development.

He could be viewed as a great long-term signing to help the Magpies thrive not just now, but in the future. But sending him out on multiple loan spells won't guarantee him success and could prove to be detrimental to his development if he can't settle down somewhere, so spending £20m on him now would be a risk.

It would also be a risk to spend that amount of money on him considering the serious knee injury he sustained at the end of last year, but looking to the future, he could be worth that much and more.

Six goals and eight assists in his 16 appearances last term before getting injured just shows how good he can be - and those are impressive stats for someone that was only 20 at the time.

Whilst £20 million would be quite expensive, prolific Championship forwards are a premium now, with Adam Armstrong going for £15 million with one year left on his deal after exploding into life in 2020-21.

Now obviously Campbell has a lot to prove in that sense - he scored nine times in his first regular season with the Potters in 2019-20 before starting the following campaign in good form with six goals in 16 outings before a knee injury curtailed it all.

Despite being out for a while with that setback, Campbell clearly hasn't lost his touch as he's scored twice in eight games since his return and they've mostly been cameo appearances whilst he gets back up to speed.

In Michael O'Neill's system now though he will be a central striker instead of cutting in from the right flank and that could see him score even more regularly than he used to - is he good enough for the Premier League right now though?

I think a move to the Magpies mid-season whilst he's still working his way back to full fitness would be the wrong move but I don't think Stoke would turn down £20 million if the offer came.

He could certainly give Callum Wilson a good foil to play with though if Eddie Howe is going forward with a 4-4-2 and he'd have to be seen as an investment at the age of 21 as a player who will probably only get better.
