Harry Souttar sends message to Stoke City fans after suffering serious injury setback

Stoke City defender Harry Souttar has taken to Instagram to send a message to the club’s supporters after suffering a serious injury setback whilst on international duty with Australia.

As confirmed by the Potters’ official website, the 23-year-old sustained ligament damage during Australia’s clash with Saudi Arabia and is now set to miss the remainder of the 2021/22 season.

Souttar will undergo surgery on his knee injury before starting his rehabilitation.

Following an impressive loan spell with Fleetwood Town during the 2019/20 campaign, the defender managed to establish himself as a key player for Stoke last season as he made 38 appearances in the Championship.

During the current term, Souttar managed to produce a number of assured performances at this level for the Potters before joining up with his national side earlier this month.

With the defender set to watch on from the sidelines for the foreseeable future, Stoke manager Michael O’Neill will be hoping that the likes of Danny Batth, Leo Ostigard and Ben Wilmot will be able to step up to the mark in the club’s upcoming fixtures.

Making reference to his injury blow on Instagram, Souttar has thanked Stoke’s fans for the messages that he has received and has insisted that he is now concentrating on getting back to full fitness as soon as possible.

The defender posted: “Well my first trip to Australia was definitely better than my second.

“Thanks for all the messages of support I have had in the last couple of days, unfortunately I’ll be out for the season with a ruptured ACL but that’s football sometimes.

“Now just have to concentrate on getting back soon as I can.

“Good luck to the @socceroos boys on Tuesday.”

The Verdict

Souttar’s injury is unquestionably a blow for Stoke who will be aiming to launch a push for a top-six finish in the Championship this season.

Before picking up this issue, the defender managed to average an impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.21 in the 16 games that he featured in for the Potters in the Championship.

If Stoke are unable to deliver the goods on a consistent basis in Souttar’s absence, O’Neill may need to bolster his defensive options in the upcoming transfer window.

Whilst signing a defender on a permanent move would be a naive decision due to the fact that Souttar is likely to make his return to action next season, the Potters may find it beneficial to draft in an experienced centre-back on a temporary basis in January.
