With goals being relatively hard to come by for Birmingham this season, if they are to avoid the drop a new striker should be at the top of the Blues wish list, but who should they target?

Former Blues striker James Vaughan may not sound appealing due to his unfortunate time at St Andrew's back in the 2015-16 season.

However, to recapture the signature of the current Bury forward may be a smart investment for Harry Redknapp if he is to keep the Blues job next season.

After joining the Blues on loan from fellow Championship club Huddersfield in 2015, Vaughan didn't enjoy his time in Birmingham at all.

Finishing the season with 16 appearances and no goals to his name, he still managed to sign a permanent deal at St Andrew's but after only playing one game in August 2016, he chose to leave.

Leaving Birmingham by mutual consent, the 28-year-old signed a two-year deal with Bury of League One, where he has since relished his most prolific season.

Scoring 24 goals in 40 appearances for the Shakers, he is the second top scorer, which has warranted him a place in the League One team of the season.

If the Blues are to survive the drop, Vaughan would surely fit straight into the Birmingham setup and solve their major goalscoring problem.

As, despite the forward being in the division below this season, previously in his career he has excelled in the Championship before, with impressive spells at Crystal Palace and Huddersfield.

Furthermore, with Vaughan only having one-year left in his contract and not looking likely to sign a new deal at Gigg Lane, the former Blue may not cost Birmingham too much.

The former England under-21, should also be enthusiastic about a return to St Andrew's, as a leap back to the Championship will most definitely be on James' priority list after such a successful season on a personal level.
