Harry Redknapp has issued his verdict on Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa, describing the Argentine coach as "a strange one".

Bielsa took over at Elland Road last summer and nearly ended the Yorkshire club's long absence from the Premier League in his first year in charge.

In the 2018/19 campaign, Leeds narrowly missed out on the automatic promotion places and then suffered a nightmarish loss to Derby County in the play-offs.

Bielsa remained with the Whites in the summer and has his side competing at the very top of the Championship once again.

Leeds are second in the table as things stand, just two points back from league leaders West Bromwich Albion.

The Argentine coach is a world-renowned coach but is also known for his radical methods and it appears Redknapp has not quite made up his mind what he thinks of the Whites boss yet.

As quoted by Leeds Live, he said: "The manager is a strange one I can’t quite work him out. He’s supposed to be a genius and he probably is, his record is good."

Having got promoted to the Premier League with Portsmouth earlier in his managerial career, Redknapp knows a thing or two about promotion and provided his thoughts on whether Leeds would make the step up this season.

He said: "I'm not sure what will happen they seem to have a couple of good wins and then a bad result.

"I’m not sure what will happen but I think they will get up - it is an open division.”

Leeds travel to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, knowing that a win against their Yorkshire rivals could see them go top if the Baggies fail to win themselves.

The Verdict

Bielsa is a very well respected coach and is seen as a mentor by some of the top managers in world football but he is slightly odd at times so you can understand Redknapp's comments.

His eccentricities are perhaps what makes him such a good coach and I'm sure Leeds fans won't mind as long as he can help them end their absence from the top flight.

Despite a recent wobble, the Whites have a chance of doing just that and look well set to mount a serious promotion push this season.
