He signed a two-year deal with St Mirren last summer but fell out with Buddies manager Danny Lennon and after just six months at the club he joined Oldham.

Harkins had another year left on his contract but both parties have gone their separate ways after mutually agreeing to the termination of the contract.

Latics boss Lee Johnson is interested in bringing the midfielder back on a permanent basis.

The 29-year-old started his career at Blackburn Rovers but never made a single appearance for the Lancashire side and spent time out on loan at Huddersfield Town, Bury and Blackpool.

After being released by Rovers he spent a season at Grimsby Town before heading back to his native Scotland enjoying spells at Partick Thistle, Kilmarnock and two spells at Dundee either side of the two seasons at Kilmarnock.
