In a statement on the Sunderland website, the club announced the 25-year-old had put pen to paper on a loan deal, becoming the Black Cats' 12th summer signing.

Sunderland head coach Jack Ross stated: “We wanted another midfielder in the squad and we wanted one who was a little bit different to what we already have.

“Max gives us a little bit more of a presence physically – box to box – and gives us more balance within the squad.”

Power, who started his career at Tranmere Rovers, made 142 appearances for Wigan before making the move to the Stadium of Light, scoring 11 times.

Sunderland won their opening League One fixture against Charlton Athletic, with a dramatic late winner from Lyndon Gooch.
