Nottingham Forest are already planning for next season and Aitor Karanka will realise that he has a lot to do to transform the East Midlands side into play-off contenders.

A late spree in the January window saw a lot of new faces arrive at the City Ground and whilst a few have been obvious upgrades, the overall team performances haven't been good enough.

One glaring issue has been a lack of goals, with Forest failing to score in 11 of the former Middlesbrough manager's 16 games in charge, which is an awful record.

However, Karanka has proven himself at this level before and knows exactly what's needed to get a side out of the division.

With that in mind, we anticipate a big clear-out this summer but here are three players that could still have a part to play if they stick around...

The defensive midfielder has suffered with injuries, but he still has struggled to get in the team since he was available, sometimes failing to even make the match day squad.

It's surprising when you consider his last start was in the 2-0 win at Wolves, where he was very effective at disrupting the play and keeping the ball.

With Jack Colback's loan up in the summer, Forest will need a midfielder to step up and Bridcutt could save Karanka scouring the market.

McKay looked like one of the bargains of the season earlier on in the campaign, delighting fans with his skill and ability to beat a man out wide.

Yet, since Karanka has taken over the Scotland international has struggled to get a game.

With Forest's worrying lack of goals and creativity, McKay may be worth keeping around as he has the ability to unlock a defence.

Karanka may consider moving the 35-year old Murphy on because of his fitness issues and a lack of goals recently, but the Irishman is worth keeping.

Clearly, Forest need at least one striker as their goalscoring record has been abysmal but you also need different types of players.

The former Ipswich man has experience, can hold the ball up and is a good option to have for certain games and off the bench. He still has a part to play.
