The news broke yesterday that influential midfielder Richard Smallwood has turned down a new contract with the club, and has chosen to further his career elsewhere.

The ball-winning midfielder has played an integral role for the club in the past few seasons and was one of the driving forces behind the club's remarkable promotion to the Championship, through a nail-biting penalty shootout win in the League One Play-Off final.

Smallwood actually netted The Millers' final penalty before Keeper' Adam Colin stepped up to the plate and made a match winning save to send the club into the 2nd tier of English football.

The 26-year-old initially joined the club on a loan deal from Middlesbrough, however this became a permanent deal when the Millers gained Championship status.

Since joining on a permanent basis, Smallwood over 100 appearances for the club, scoring just three goals in the process.

There is no doubting that Smallwood will be big boots for someone to fill in that Rotherham United midfield as he brought a tenacity, will to win and sheer determination that was unrivalled.

It remains to be seen where the tough tackling midfield man will be playing his football next season.

This is how Rotherham United fans reacted to the news on Twitter....
