Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that six players will be released this summer when their contracts expire, including striker Gary Hooper.

The Owls confirmed the update on their website hours after the season had finished with a 2-1 defeat at home to QPR.

David Jones, Daniel Pudil, Marco Matias, George Boyd and Almen Abdi are the other senior players that the Yorkshire side will move on, with their departures sure to reduce the wage bill significantly.

Most supporters recognise that the club need to cut costs and many of those players haven't been delivering or lived up to the expectation.

However, Hooper's exit has divided opinion. Several serious injuries have hindered his progress over the past 18 months but he has fought back to get back in the team and shown flashes of his quality recently.

The fans certainly appreciate his efforts over the years and all were sad to see him go.
