Stoke City striker Scott Hogan could be about to cut short his season-long loan spell as the Potters are happy to let the striker return to Aston Villa by the end of January, according to the Stoke Sentinel.

Hogan joined Stoke over the summer after being deemed surplus to requirements at Villa Park ahead of their Premier League campaign, but the frontman has struggled to establish himself with the Potters after only making four league starts for the club.

Michael O'Neill has now failed to include the 27-year-old on the bench for Stoke's last three matches, and this suggests his time with the bet365 Stadium is now coming to a premature end as they look to make space in the squad for potential signings.

It is thought Hogan has dropped further down the Potters' pecking order of late following recent goals from Sam Vokes, Tyrese Campbell and Lee Gregory, with Hogan having only managed to find the net twice during his stint at the club.

Hogan could now be set for another loan stint during the second half of the campaign, but there is also a chance he will be utilised by Villa boss Dean Smith as he looks to maximise his resources in order to boost the Midlands side's survival bid.
