Bradford City slipped out of the EFL Cup at the first hurdle last night, beaten soundly by Preston North End 4-0.

The Bantams have opened their League Two campaign with two draws, against Grimsby Town and Cambridge United, and were not expected to topple Alex Neill's Championship side.

However, they were soundly beaten on the night, with on-loan Aston Villa forward Andre Green opening the scoring before 15 minutes had elapsed. Tom Barkhuizen added a brace in either half before Josh Harrop concluded the rout with little under 20 minutes remaining.

Manager Gary Bowyer was disappointed with his side, claiming on the official club website he was disappointed with the nature by which his team went out of the competition.

“It was a disappointing night against a very good team. They have assembled a very good squad which you could see.

“Having said that, I am very unhappy with the manner of the goals we conceded and the opportunities our players have missed."

Bantams' supporters were equally as disappointed after turning out to watch their side. The defeat was humbling, a stark reminder of the task they have in making themselves League Two promotion contenders.
