It's fair to say that the pressure is firmly on Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson at the moment, with the Black Cats being beaten 2-1 by MK Dons on Saturday.

That defeat means that Sunderland are currently sat sixth in the League One table, but have now lost their last three matches in all competitions.

You only have to look at the responses to the club's Twitter page at full-time to see that a number of the supporters have lost patience with Parkinson.

Speaking in an interview with the Speaking Sunderland podcast, former Black Cats boss Gus Poyet hinted that he'd be keen on returning to the club in the future, but wouldn't be drawn into a concrete answer whilst Phil Parkinson is still in charge.

"Yes, I said it already a few months ago. Yes, of course because there are things that are still possible to change. Just to clarify because I always said it, right now you’ve got a manager, Phil Parkinson, he’s doing very well.

"It’s a different situation but it’s something that. When you’ve been in a club and you’ve been so close to people and then everyone watches the series Sunderland ‘Til I Die, and then the first thing they do, they call you and they ask you “You’ve been there and it confirmed things that you already told them” because that’s what Sunderland ‘Til I Die does, confirmed to people things that I told them when I left Sunderland."

Poyet admitted that he would still be welcome to return to the Stadium of Light, and looked back on his relationship with the Sunderland supporters during his tenure, which came to an end in March 2015.

"It’s like you want to go back because it’s typical South American passion, you know, the fans.

"So that relationship that we made with the fans, even if it didn’t finish in the best way, I am still thinking that it’s possible to do something important there and it’s easier when you know how much it [the football club] means to fans. How important it is to the city, so yeah, of course."

Sunderland are set to return to action next weekend, when they take on Doncaster Rovers, in what is likely to be a tricky test up against Darren Moore's side at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The Verdict:

This one will divide opinion amongst Sunderland supporters I'm sure.

The pressure is firmly on current Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson, which is probably understandable given their recent slump in form under his management.

If they are to relieve the former Bolton manager of his duties at the Stadium of Light, then it's important that they get their next appointment right, otherwise they'll find themselves playing in League One next season once again.

I'm not sure now would be the right time for Poyet to return to the club, as I think there are better options out there for the Black Cats as they target promotion back into the Championship this season.
