Plymouth Argyle fans had every right to be excited in the 2016 transfer window, as they picked up a proven striker to aid their push to the League Two title.

They were battling with Doncaster and Portsmouth for a place in League One, ultimately winning promotion at the end of the season. Fans were delighted to see them sign Daniel Nardiello on loan to give them that little nudge forward.

Nardiello had bagged 16 goals for Bury the season before, not long after hitting 23 goals in 45 for Rotherham United. It was seen as a great acquisition by Derek Adams and one that was warmly received.

There were a few mutterings about his Exeter City past, he registered 19 goals in 66 appearances for the Pilgrims' rivals. Although one or two fans mumbled a bit about it, goals would be the currency by which he'd buy their support.

Sadly, he didn't manage to make an impression at Home Park. In fact, he played just four times from the bench for a total of 32 minutes.

The reasons behind his demise were two fold; he'd picked up an injury at Bury and couldn't get back to the fitness levels he needed, but more importantly Derek Adams had too many loan players in his squad. He could only pick five for a match day and Nardiello was the one who missed out.

By the end of his loan spell he had returned to Bury, still employed by Plymouth, but training with his parent club. It was a sad end to a strong career, with him only playing for Bangor Town after that.

Having started out at Manchester United and enjoyed a stellar career with a number of clubs, Plymouth fans were right to be excited even if the promise was left unfulfilled.
