Grimsby Town have announced that Michael Jolley has left his role as manager of the club after a run of seven games without a win in all competitions.

The 42-year-old was appointed as the Mariners boss in March 2018, succeeding Russell Slade, and he made an instant impact with the side staying up in League Two. Then, the team finished 17th under his guidance last season.

However, the board clearly haven't seen the improvements they wanted in the current campaign, with the news breaking on their official site this morning that Jolley had left.

"Grimsby Town Football Club can confirm that following a recent run of poor results, it has parted company with Manager Michael Jolley by mutual consent."

That poor run of form includes the side failing to win in seven, although it should be said that only four of those games came in the league.

The statement also revealed that Anthony Limbrick and Dave Moore will take charge on a caretaker basis until a permanent new manager is named, with their first game coming at Newport on Wednesday in an FA Cup first round replay.

The verdict

This certainly came out of the blue and I'm not sure that it's the right call from the Grimsby board.

They have changed too much over the years and it seemed as though Jolley was looking to build something for the long-term and he was trying to implement a clear style of play.

Okay, results in the past month or so have been poor but on the whole he has done a decent job considering the resources he had available, so it will be interesting to see who comes in next.
