Grimsby Town hopeful reveals update on manager’s job

Former Arsenal and England star Sol Campbell is waiting to hear back from Grimsby Town after speaking to them about the vacant manager’s role at Blundell Park.

As quoted by ESPN, Campbell said: “It’s up to them now. They are probably talking to other people, naturally. If they give it to me, I’ll be ecstatic; if they give it to someone I’ll be over the moon. Good luck to whoever gets it but I have to keep on going, that’s all you can do really. I’ve spoken to Oxford and spoken to Grimsby Town so I’m going to see what happens.”

Campbell has been seeking a route back into football ever since retiring and confirmed applying for the vacant Oxford United manager’s job too. He has little League Two experience though, bar a short spell with Notts County almost ten years ago.

Grimsby have been searching for a manager since the departure of Russell Slade on February 11th. Chairman John Fenty has taken his time in appointing a new face as the Mariners have tumbled to 20th in the League Two table. This is only their second season back in the Football League after a six-year absence.

They’ve failed to win in the last 14 outings, collecting just four points from a possible 42. Their run in doesn’t look favourable either as, with just 11 games left, five of those are against sides currently hunting promotion.

The Verdict

Whilst Campbell is a high-profile name, it would seem very dangerous to place your faith in the hands of an unproven manager at this stage of the season, especially with the National League looming large on the horizon. The situation at Blundell Park is precarious at best and whoever does eventually pull his chair up to the manager’s desk will have to lift a set of players with the worst current form of all 72 Football League clubs.
