Jaap Stam’s Reading have made a solid start to the new Championship season, just months on from losing the play-off final at Wembley to Huddersfield Town.

The Royals went down on penalties to David Wagner’s Terriers back in May to consign them to another season of second tier football, and there may have been an element of a play-off hangover in their opening day defeat at Queens Park Rangers.

However, the Berkshire outfit drew 1-1 at home to Fulham the week after before beating Aston Villa 2-1 three days later, and although they then lost 1-0 at Preston North End, they entered the international break off the back of 2-0 victory at Birmingham City.

New signing Jon Dadi Bodvarsson bagged his first Reading goal in the win at St Andrew’s, and was one of seven new additions to arrive at the Madejski Stadium over the summer, which included a club record deal for Fulham’s Sone Aluko.

First teamers Ali Al-Habsi and Danny Williams did leave the club during the close season but otherwise the vast majority of last season’s team remains intact, and with new contracts for the likes of Liam Moore, Jordan Obita, and John Swift, the Royals have certainly done all they can to give themselves another shot at promotion.

The club did miss out on a striker though as the window ticked towards its conclusion, despite reported offers for Norwich City’s Nelson Oliviera and Preston’s Jordan Hugill, and several Reading fans have taken to Twitter to express their views on their side’s business.

And it’s fair to say that missing out on a striker has frustrated some in what has otherwise been a strong window from the Royals…
