Jed Steer has extended his stay at Aston Villa.

The Express and Star is reporting that the goalkeeper triggered a 12-month clause in his current deal when arriving back from a loan spell in January.

Steer was set to be out of contract in the summer but having been on loan at Charlton Athletic since the start of the campaign, he was recalled in the new year.

That is when the clause was activated with the injury to Orjan Nyland.

Steer is having his best spell in the first team at Villa due to another goalkeeping injury in the form of Lovre Kalinic.

The 26-year-old has started the previous five games and kept three clean sheets as Villa moved into the top-six this past weekend.

Nyland’s arrival in the summer looked as if it had spelt the end of Steer’s time at Villa with a League One loan approved – and with Kalinic coming in January, all hope seemed lost.

But after bad luck and several injuries, the goalkeeper is now one of the main men at Villa Park after a string of impressive, consistent performances to help reinvigorate the club’s play-off push.

And there was plenty of reaction when news came to light of Steer’s one-year extension on social media…
