Millwall’s pursuit for a new striker stretched over much of the 2014 summer transfer window.

Ian Holloway had just kept Millwall up the previous season and was looking to add to his squad ahead of a crack at reaching the Premier League once more having remained in the Championship.

Carlos Edwards had already signed, before a saga that would last what it felt was a lifetime was concluded.

On June 17, 2014, Millwall announced they had signed FC Halifax striker Lee Gregory on a three-year deal.

The former non-league hotshot had scored 31 goals in the National League for the Shaymen the previous year - and Millwall supporters were impressed with the addition of the part-time electrician.

Gregory came into much acclaim, but the system deployed by Ian Holloway was not conducive to the way the striker played.

He was up front on his own for the majority of the season but notched his first goal in the 3-1 defeat to Birmingham in his fifth appearance.

The then 25-year-old scored nine times in his debut EFL season, getting his first professional hat-trick in a 3-3 draw with Derby County.

Holloway was sacked, and Neil Harris was appointed, but that could not stop the Lions from being relegated.

In League One, and after a system change, Gregory was partnered with a returning Steve Morison - and it was magic form the off.

He managed 27 goals in all competitions as Millwall made it to a play-off final but were defeated at Wembley.

A less prolific season the following year, but 18 goals were scored, and Millwall were promoted back to the Championship at the second attempt.

Last season Gregory managed ten goals, but apart from hitting the back of the net, his all-round game had improved tremendously.

Able to hold the ball up, draw fouls and chase down anything and everything,  the striker was becoming a handful outside the penalty box as well as in it.

His work rate and work ethic have come on an insurmountable amount since his arrival at The Den, and he has become a firm fans' favourite for his sheer determination to give his all week in and week out.

Millwall fans’ first thoughts were positive but they have been suitably impressed with the 30-year-old since his arrival at The Den, if nothing but his tireless style of play which has endeared him to the Den faithful.

Expectations have certainly been exceeded from between when Gregory signed and the present day.
