Sheffield Wednesday could be handed a big injury boost for Saturday’s game against Bristol City with Tom Lees in contention to play.

The former Leeds centre-back hasn’t played since mid-November after requiring groin surgery, whilst he suffered a minor setback a few weeks ago that also delayed his return.

However, Lees has been back in training this week and manager Jos Luhukay told the Sheffield Star that he has a chance of featuring at Hillsborough this weekend providing he comes through unscathed in the next two training sessions.

I hope that we have positive news that he can play. Hopefully he can train Thursday and Friday with us and not have problems. He can maybe be an option for the team.”

The 27-year old defender admitted that his desire to play through the pain may have caused him to have an extended period out.

Maybe if I had swallowed my pride a bit earlier I might have been out a couple of weeks rather than a couple of months.”

With just one win in the Championship since Boxing Day, the Owls are only seven points ahead of the relegation zone heading into the weekends fixtures.

The Verdict

This is great news for Sheffield Wednesday as there’s no doubt about it, they’re in real danger of getting sucked into a relegation battle.

That’s probably understandable given their ridiculous injury situation, so everyone connected to the club will be delighted to see a key man returning.

For Lees, he will be desperate to get out and play and will be a key player as Wednesday look to improve.
