Reading are hoping to be able to welcome back midfielder John Swift as they hunt three points in their crunch clash with Bolton this evening.

Both sides are fighting against the drop and are tied on points, with the Royals holding a game in hand. It will be the stereotypical six-pointer and Jaap Stam is sweating on his player's fitness.

Speaking to The Reading Chronicle he said: "“I spoke to the medical staff at the last game against Derby when he came on,” said the under-pressure Dutchman. It was already planned that he wouldn't play against Sheffield United because there wasn't enough time between the games for his hamstring to settle down."

Swift has had a tough time with injuries this season, starting just 12 league games as the Royals flounder at the wrong end of the table. Having represented England from U16 to U21 level he has the undoubted quality that Stam needs to see if his side are to retain Championship football. However, he won't risk his star man unless absolutely sure he is fit.

"It's always a danger and I was thinking that maybe he could play a half, but the medical staff know what's best for him long term."

Stam added: "We'll look at him and hopefully he'll be available soon."

Swift joined Reading in July 2016 on a three-year deal with an option of an extra year.

The Verdict

Swift is a player of real talent and one who could yet force his way back into the top flight after his Chelsea upbringing.

Jaap Stam won't be the only one hoping he returns to fitness soon, he'll be wanting to make a name for himself and avoid becoming another Jacob Mellis or Billy Knott, graduating from Chelsea to a life in League Two.
