On Tuesday it was revealed that Bristol City centre-back Aden Flint was to undergo a medical at the Riverside ahead of a move to Middlesbrough.

The transfer fee is believed to be £5 million initially with a potential £2 million extra in add-ons should Flint achieve certain things during his time at Boro, and Swindon Town are set to benefit massively from the deal as well, reports the Bristol Post.

Swindon have a sell on clause meaning they get between 15 and 20% of whatever fee Bristol City are paid for Flint.

Therefore David Flitcroft's side could be looking at a windfall of up to £1.4 million from the deal.

Flint moved to Bristol City from Swindown Town at the start of the 2013/14 season for around £300,000. The centre-back proved to be a pivotal member of the City side that won the League One title the following season scoring 15 goals including a hat-trick in an 8-2 drubbing of Walsall on the final day of the season.

Flint will become Tony Pulis's second big money signing of the summer after bringing in Paddy McNair from Sunderland for £5million.

The verdict

This is a great example of brilliant business by Swindon Town. At the time selling a talented young centre-back for £300,000 may have looked a bit daft, but any chance of that has been put to bed with this sell on clause.

£1million goes a very long way in League Two, and it could give Swindon's promotion hopes a massive boost if it is reinvested smartly.
