Birmingham City have been handed a reprieve ahead of the busy festive period, with the club announcing via their official website that midfielder David Davis had returned to training following an ankle injury.

The 26-year-old limped out of the Blues home defeat to Queens Park Rangers last weekend, with fears that the player could miss an extended spell.

However the injury was not as bad as first feared, and Davis could be available for selection when Steve Cotterill’s side take on fellow strugglers Sunderland at The Stadium of Light this weekend.

Defeat would see the Blues bottom of the league on Christmas Day, and it would take a monumental effort to recover from such a demoralising setback.

Cotterill confirmed that Davis trained yesterday, and will monitor his progress today ahead of Saturday’s fixture.

The Verdict

Davis has appeared regularly for the Blues this season, but has failed to stop the rot that has taken over the club this season.

Birmingham brought in enough quality to ensure the Blues would avoid another relegation scrap, but new boss Cotterill has simply failed to install cohesion amongst this talented squad.

Injuries have been a problem this year, and Davis’ quick return is a huge reprieve, but it will take a lot more than the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man to keep the West Midlands side in the second tier this season.
