In 2017, Sunderland were preparing for life in the Championship, and announced an impressive double signing in the hope to fire themselves back into the Premier League.

James Vaughan and Aiden McGeady were signed, but they went on to suffer contrasting times at the Stadium of Light.

The majority of the Sunderland supporters were delighted to see the experienced duo arrive at the club.

See how they reacted on Twitter to the arrival of the pair at the time below.

Vaughan was signed as the striker that they would hope could fill the void left by Jermain Defoe who departed for Bournemouth earlier in the transfer window.

But Vaughan struggled from day one in his time with the Black Cats and scored just two goals as Sunderland were eventually relegated from the Championship to make it back-to-back relegations.

His spell lasted less than a year as he left to join Wigan Athletic in the January transfer window where he again, has struggled to score regular goals.

He now plays for Portsmouth but is yet to make a league start, and unsurprisingly hasn't found the back of the net for the League One promotion chasers.

McGeady's arrival was met with surprise, especially given that the Irishman could arguably have been playing in the Premier League, as opposed to the Championship.

Even more surprisingly though, he still is with the club to this day.

McGeady has scored ten goals this season for the Black Cats in their league campaign this year and is a crucial member of Jack Ross' side.

If they are to have any chance of returning to the Championship at the first time of asking, then they will need McGeady to be at his best heading towards the end of this season.

Both McGeady and Vaughan suffered mixed fortunes in their time with the club, but both will now be hoping their sides can win promotion back into the Championship.
