In 2013, and after four years at the club, it was decided that Nigel Clough's time at Derby County had run its course with the manager losing three games in just eight days at the start of the season.

Steve McClaren was the man tasked with building on the solid foundations that Clough had laid at Pride Park and take the Rams back into the Premier League.

It was a spell that started off well as the former QPR coach picked up 19 points from his first available 21 winning himself manager of the month in December, and brought the Rams all the way to the play-off final, where they lost out to THAT Zamora goal.

McClaren was retained for the following season but a huge loss of form followed after Newcastle United approached him to be their manager, and he was eventually sacked at the end of the season.

After an unsuccessful spell at St James' Park which ultimately set the Magpies up for relegation, McClaren was once again relieved of his duties.

In the meantime the Rams had had unsuccessful spells with Paul Clement and then Nigel Pearson with the latter losing his job just a few months into the 2016/17 season.

Once again they were on the lookout for a manager, so who should they turn to?

Well, there was a sense of de ja vu when McClaren was announced as the club's manager yet again.

This is FLW Rewind where we take a look back at an iconic moment in a club's recent history, look at the initial reaction and how events actually transpired.

The reaction from the Derby faithful was somewhat surprising. After his sacking, many of them were furious with the former England boss after losing focus during his previous spell at the club.

But many appeared to be delighted he was back...

Nigel Pearson had won just two matches in the opening two months of the 2016/17 season when McClaren took up the reigns and things started much better for him.

Five wins out of his first seven matches brought a sense of optimism back to the club and included wins against Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday, Wolves and Norwich.

When the Rams went the whole of the tricky December period without being beaten there was a real sense that this could turn into a successful season with a 3-0 win against fierce rivals Nottingham Forest the pick of the performances.

2017 started with a shoddy 3-0 loss at Carrow Road to Norwich City but it was not a disastrous month by any means with the Rams picking up six points out of 12.

February was the month that knives began to be sharpened behind the scenes with the club completely winless, losing four and drawing two

And the second Derby County marching orders of the last four years were harshly given to McClaren midway through March after a 3-0 loss to Brighton as the club desperately tried to break into the playoff places.

A slight upturn in form followed under Gary Rowett, but arguably not enough to justify the sacking of McClaren with the Rams still finishing 13 points adrift of the top six.
