Hull City manager Grant McCann has conceded that his side "got what they deserved" in their 1-0 defeat to Barnsley at the KCOM Stadium on Wednesday night.

Cauley Woodrow's strike three minutes before half time was enough to lift the Tykes off the bottom of the Championship table, and leave Hull winless in their last ten games in all competitions.

The Tigers are now 17th in the second-tier standings following that run, just four points clear of the relegation zone, and McCann certainly did not appear impressed with what he saw from his side in their latest defeat.

Speaking to the club's official website about that loss, the Hull boss said: “We got what we deserved tonight. Barnsley was the better team and won the game fair and square.

“It’s disappointing but we have to take it on the chin. Barnsley played and we didn’t. We just didn’t perform. To a man, we didn’t perform and we can’t shy away from that.

“We didn’t really play with any urgency, tempo or aggression. We were a bit placid in our pressing and closing down and they were able to wriggle out of too many challenges for my liking. I thought we better in the second half. Not much better, but we looked a bit more of a threat."

That performance saw Hull booed off the pitch after both 45 and 90 minutes by the home support, and discussing that reaction from the fans, McCann continued: “I understand their frustrations. They pay their hard-earned money to come here and we haven’t given them anything to cheer about in the last nine games – it’s as simple as that.

“Yes – apart from the Brentford game – we’ve been in every other match but that’s the fine margins of the Championship. At the end of the day, we keep coming out on the wrong end of it.

“It’s not good at the minute. It’s a tough time but one thing I do know about tough times is that you’ve got to stick together and stay strong and that is what we have to do now going forward.”

The Verdict

This has to be a big concern for Hull.

Right now it is hard to see where their next win is coming from, and with the position they are in at the minute, that means they are in serious trouble in the fight for survival.

That will not be helped by the fact that teams below them such as Barnsley all seem to be hitting form round about now, meaning the margin for errors that Hull are making is rapidly declining.

McCann therefore will have to come up with something quickly, and with fellow strugglers Stoke and Charlton to come immediately after that clash with Leeds, it seems there is an opportunity approaching for the Tigers that they simply have to take.
