Sunderland captain Grant Leadbitter has claimed the Black Cats “expect to win every game”, following their first loss of the season at the hands of Peterborough United.

Peterborough beat Jack Ross’ side 3-0 at the Weston Homes Stadium, in a game which Sunderland finished with nine men after both Luke O’Nien and Charlie Wyke were sent off.

The Black Cats were unbeaten heading into the game but their loss to the Posh has seen them drop down into sixth in League One heading into the international break.

Speaking to the club website, Leadbitter provided a strong reaction to the defeat, claiming that the club expect to win every game.

He said: “We’re Sunderland football club.

“Six games? If you’re talking 16 games, that’s what I want to be doing. I want to go 15, 16 games unbeaten–not six.

“But you swallow your defeats as good as your wins and move onto the next one.

“We don’t want to lose football games. It’s as simple as that. Sunderland football club, we hate losing games.

“We expect to win every game and the pressure is on Sunderland every game in this division.

“But sometimes in football, you have to take your medicine. You swallow it and move on.”

Due to having players on international duty during over the weekend, Sunderland have to wait until their trip to Accrington Stanley on Saturday 14th of September for their chance to get back for winning ways.

The Verdict

The defeat to Peterborough will have been a really frustrating way to head into the international break for the Black Cats.

However, Leadbitter’s reaction is an extremely encouraging one and shows that confidence is still really high amongst the squad.

Sunderland are only three points off the top of the league but they could slip further behind if one of the teams ahead of them wins during the international break.
