Fleetwood Town manager Graham Alexander is set to challenge his squad of players to show their worth by winning promotion to League One.

The Cod Army made it to Wembley following a 1-0 aggregate win over York City, with a 0-0 draw at Highbury yesterday evening.

After narrowly missing out on a top three spot, Fleetwood will head to Wembley on the 26th May, to try and win a sixth promotion in 10 season’s.

Fleetwood will meet either Burton Albion or Southend in the Wembley show-piece, with Alexander challenging his side to win another promotion, following a superb season to date.

“I’m really happy – to get to Wembley is the next step that we wanted to take, it’s not the goal, it’s not the target, but it’s the next step,” the former  Preston and Burnley skipper said.

“York made it hard for us for a nil-nil. It was end-to-end and a proper play-off game and we’re pleased we got there.”

“When it came down to the crunch the defenders and the goalkeeper were fantastic over the two legs, especially tonight,” added Alexander, who was speaking to Sky Sports.

“It was one for men and that’s what we saw out there. They really came at us from minute one.

“I think we could have played better, been a bit more composed, but to be fair to York they really came at us and on another day they could have pinched a goal.

“But we had chances as well, so it was disappointing we didn’t take them, but I thought for a 0-0 it was an end-to-end game.”

Backed by the millions of local gas entrepreneur Andy Pilley, who has overseen the clubs success, the Cod Army will head to Wembley full of confidence.
