Derby County midfielder Graeme Shinnie has revealed that he was delighted that he was able make a telling impact for the club against Luton Town, following what has been a tough start to life at Pride Park.

The Scotland international, who signed a three-year deal with the Rams this summer following the expiry of his contract at Aberdeen (via BBC Sport), made his first appearance under manager Phillip Cocu on Saturday.

Excellent throughout the clash, Shinnie helped Derby extend their unbeaten run in the Championship to five games as they secured a 2-0 victory over the Hatters.

Despite taking the lead in the 11th minute via a Matty Pearson own goal, the Rams were fortunate not to concede an equaliser as James Collins and Ryan Tunnicliffe both missed chances for Luton.

Tom Lawrence doubled the Rams' advantage in the second-half as he fired past goalkeeper Simon Sluga.

As a result of this victory, Derby moved up to 13th in the Championship standings.

Speaking to the Derby Telegraph following the game, Shinnie said: "It's been a tough season for me so far, not playing as much as I would've liked to.

"I've had to be patient but keep my head down and worked as hard as I can to make sure I'm ready for when the manager needs me.

"This was the day and thankfully I put in a good performance and the team got the win."

Shinnie later added: "Having not played all season, it's always tough to come into a game and I felt like I needed to start well and set a tone for the rest of the match for myself and the first half, especially, was really good.

"In the second-half, we defended more and they changed their shape and had a few chances but overall, we are delighted with a clean sheet and a win."

The Verdict

Having finally made his bow for the Rams, Shinnie will be hoping to push on over the coming months at Pride Park.

Unquestionably one of Derby's stand-out performers at the weekend, the 28-year-old could emerge as a key player for the club providing that he stays consistent.

With the Rams set to face Charlton Athletic on October 19th, it will be intriguing to see how Shinnie fares against Lee Bowyer's side.
