Graeme Jones has reflected on Luton's vital win over Brentford as the Hatters held on at Kenilworth Road to win 2-1 against the high-flying Bees.

An own goal from Shandon Baptiste put the home side ahead inside the opening ten minutes before Martin Cranie volleyed into the roof of the net after a free-kick fell his way inside the area.

Ollie Watkins pulled one back for the Bees with nine minutes to go as he slotted in a cut-back from Mads Roerslev.

Luton held on for the win which sees them move off the foot of the table and makes things even more competitive heading into the final 11 games.

Speaking to the official Luton website after the game, Jones said: "I think the level of performance has been there for a long time now, but we had to win in a different way tonight. We couldn’t take Brentford on and try and beat them with probably too many injuries.

"Off the ball I thought we were absolutely outstanding. Set pieces were important and the character of the players, the energy - the players need to take all the credit. They were to a man, exceptional.

“There’s a long way to go when you score early against Brentford! Brentford are an outstanding football team. That was a higher level game tonight in terms of performance.

"If anyone gets any time to have a look at the intelligence of our press - they’ve spent millions, they’ve got top quality individuals, and if they won tonight, they would have gone third in the league.

"We won the game with our character, our off the ball press and intelligence, our set pieces, and it was a different way of winning for us. I prefer to take people on with certain players if they were fit, and we had to find a different way tonight. It was so satisfying."

The Hatters are four points off climbing out the relegation zone with Middlesbrough currently going through a poor run of form.

Luton leapfrogged Barnsley into 23rd who face Hull City tonight.

The next game for the Hatters comes against the relegation-threatened Stoke City at Kenilworth Road on Saturday with Michael O'Neill's team just four points ahead of Luton.

The Verdict

Luton had to dig deep and hold on against Brentford.

Two set-pieces led to the Luton goals as they were forced to take advantage of dead-ball situations against one of the better footballing teams in the division.

The three points could go a long way for Luton come the end of the season and Jones will be delighted with his side's performance.
