Luton Town manager Graeme Jones has stated that he is thinking about bringing in a sports psychologist to help his players deal with the mental step of being in the Championship.

The Hatters were only promoted to the division last season, and have since struggled in some aspects of the league.

On Saturday, Luton were thrashed at Reading 3-0, and it continued a poor run of form for Jones' side as that was their fourth loss in a row meaning they sit just one place outside of the relegation zone.

Jones has expressed his desire to use a sports psychologist to help with the mental step of being in the Championship.

Speaking to the Evening Express, Jones said: "Some players don't need any psychological help. Sports psychology is what we're talking about here. I've worked at every level and, without revealing names, we've used sports psychologists through the years.

"Some people can repair themselves, some people need help and we're at a point now where maybe we're going to have to think about going down that route.

"It's an area that I understand, it's an area that I will be looking at deeply. It's a reality of the mental step in the Championship, which I keep speaking about."

Luton face a difficult test in their first game after the international break as high-flying Leeds United visit Kenilworth Road.

Defeat in that game could see them slip into the relegation zone, should results elsewhere go their way.

The Verdict

Quite a statement from Jones, but he has to do whatever it takes to keep his side in the division and this could be vital in the Hatters keeping their Championship status.

If they can overcome that mental block from just being promoted, then they have some very good players who can on their day, hurt the opposition.

It seems to be when they go a goal down, at times they can become unfocused. They have picked up impressive results against sides such as Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City but will need to improve to stay in the division.
