The feel-good factor was back at Kenilworth Road after achieving promotion back to the English Football League after five years away.

Luton Town won the National League at a canter in 2013/14 with 101 points and looked right away to add to their side ahead of a crack at League Two.

John Still did not hesitate and made his first signing of the summer on May 20, 2015, when Jack Marriott arrived from Ipswich Town.

An initial one-year-deal was signed with a view to an extension with the newly promoted side.

The reaction from the Hatters’ fans on Twitter was one of a typically warm welcome from the National League champions.

The then 20-year-old Marriott was thankful for the welcome he had received and looked forward to getting regular first-team football under a lower-league powerhouse in Still.

And the striker hit the ground running getting a brace on his home debut in the League Cup win over Bristol City; he would have to wait for his first league goals, however.

After receiving a straight red in the win over Leyton Orient and a three-match ban served, Marriott responded perfectly with his first two goals in the league for his new side, coming in a 2-0 win over Wimbledon.

Marriott would go on to be the club’s top goalscorer the season in all competitors with 16 goals - 14 coming in the league - as the Hatters consolidated in 11th place after promotion.

The striker was up to his old tricks again the following season, scoring 12 goals as the Hatters made the League Two play-offs but fell over two legs to eventual winners Blackpool.

And after two seasons and 28 goals, Marriott’s time at Kenilworth Road came to an end.

Peterborough United, who are adept at bringing in players from the lower leagues and turning them into starts snapped up the 22-year-old striker for a “substantial fee” according to Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

The reaction was as expected, a genuine thanks for his efforts and well wishes after his time at Luton came to an end to move up to League One and to Peterborough United.

Initially, the fans were welcoming and hopeful he would do well, and he did exactly that during his time at Kenilworth Road.

Since moving away, he scored 33 goals during his only season in League One with the Posh before a £5million move to Championship side Derby County was completed.

Luton fans thought Marriott was destined for but things and their opinion was vindicated with the striker moving up two divisions in two season’s.

The Hatters support could not have been more right about this signing.
