Middlesbrough travel to Derby County this weekend, with Jonathan Woodgate's side looking for their first win in seven matches. form that has seen Boro fall into the relegation zone in the Championship.

Ahead of the weekend though, Woodgate has been linked with Aberdeen striker Sam Cosgrove, as reported on TEAMtalk,  a player who could add some much needed fire-power to the lowest scorers in the division.

The 22-year-old has been in fine form the the SPFL outfit, notching six league goals so far and then 15 in all competitions.

So would Cosgrove be a good addition to the Riverside and is he actually needed?

We discuss........

Jordan Rushworth

“Middlesbrough are certainly in need of finding more goals, with Jonathan Woodgate’s side really struggling to convert the few chances they are creating, and with the weight of pressure on Britt Assombalonga’s shoulders he is also really struggling to find his usual form in front of goal.

“Bringing in a player like Cosgrove, who has been impressive for Aberdeen this season, would be a very good move for them, as it would allow some pressure to be taken off Assombalonga, and he would arrive full of confidence and belief which would help him convert chances.

“Cosgrove has probably earned a move to the Championship with his form and at Middlesbrough he would be able to come in and make an immediate impact, due to the lack of form of the club’s other attacking players.

“The striker would also offer something different than Boro’s other forwards, with more of physical presence to attack crosses and set-pieces, with Rudy Gestede failing to make an impact Boro are in need of a more physical presence up front.”

Ben Lang

"There's not really any reason why Middlesbrough shouldn't look to take this gamble, as Cosgrove could give the club a much-needed boost in the second half of the season.

"Jonathan Woodgate has endured a difficult start to his Boro tenure, with his side sitting 22nd in the Championship table having scored just 11 goals, and Cosgrove could be the man to lift the Teesside outfit from their lowly position.

"The other positive is that Cosgrove would be available for a cheap fee, so it is a low-risk move, and the fact he is only 22 means he also has plenty of time to develop if he's not quite ready for the Championship.

"Britt Assombalonga has only managed to score four league goals so far this term, so Cosgrove's arrival could serve to ease the goal-scoring burden from the striker, while also being a signing that fits Woodgate's model for the future of the club."

“Good signing in my opinion. Cosgrove is proving this season that he is a top goal-scorer and could be exactly what Woodgate needs in his side.

“It’s no secret that Boro are short on goals this season with the usually reliable Britt Assombalonga misfiring along with Fletcher’s lack of goals, and Cosgrove could be the player to solve the problem.

“The signing might not be as effective as it is on paper because Middlesbrough’s problems stem from much more than just not taking chances. Their problems also lie in not being able to create many chances too so another forward might not solve this.

“If Woodgate can get his side creating more chances from now until January, adding another striker could be a great signing.”
