Sheffield United's Samir Carruthers has left the club on a temporary basis, signing a season-long loan deal with Oxford United.

After playing just 17 games last term and not featuring since an FA Cup match in February, Carruthers has been offloaded.

The 25-year-old drops down a division, where he reunited with his former Milton Keynes Dons boss Karl Robinson at Oxford.

Carruthers joined Sheffield United from MK Dons in January 2017 and has gone on to play 31 games in all competitions for the club.

But after falling down the pecking order at Bramall Lane and being put on the transfer list, the former Republic of Ireland youth international has opted to drop down to League One.

Sheffield United fans seem to think this is a sensible move for all parties; the Blades get his wages off their books, Oxford get a player with vast League One experience and the former Arsenal and Aston Villa schoolboy gets regular playing time again under a boss he knows well.
