Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed the permanent transfer of defender Ash Baker to Newport County.

The 23-year-old joined the club from Cardiff City in 2017 and has since been a sporadic feature of the first-team, making just 13 appearances in all competitions since joining.

Last season, Baker made 11 league appearances under managers Jos Luhukay and Steve Bruce before being cut adrift from the first-team this season. His struggles were not helped by a lengthy injury lay-off in September when he suffered a groin problem for the under-23 side, keeping him out until November.

Baker has made appearances for the Wales under-21 side in the past, featuring in their UEFA under-21 campaigns between 2017 and 2019. Now at 23, he has not made a first-team appearance since playing 90 minutes at right-midfield in the 2-1 defeat away to Swansea City last season, in December 2018.

The defender has now left the club on a permanent basis, having joined Newport County today for an undisclosed fee, the club have announced. Born in Bridgend, Baker is now much closer to home and joins the League Two side on a deal that runs until the end of the 2020/21 season.
