Lewis Baker would be a quality signing for Leeds.

Marcelo Bielsa has stressed the need to make the right signings, but few of them.

They need to be quality players who are upgrades on the current squad and can be used in his style of play. Baker is all of these.

Last year, Lewis Baker signed a five-year contract with Chelsea.

Yet he has not played for them since his three minute debut in 2014. Instead, he has managed to have productive loan spells. Most notable was his 2016/17 season at Vitesse Arnhem, it was here that he showcased his attacking prowess.

Ten league goals were supplemented by five goals in the KNVB Cup, including both goals in their 2-1 semi-final win. It secured the tournament’s golden boot for the Englishman.

Although a versatile player who could play a variety of roles for Bielsa, Baker is predominantly an attacking midfielder.

Consequently, Baker would compete with Samuel Saiz for a starting berth.

Saiz arrived at Leeds with high hopes. Yet he lost his way as the season went on, failing to score after November. This lack of consistency and his hot-headedness (most notably receiving a six-game ban for spitting on a Newport County player) cost Leeds their play-off challenge.

Baker found himself out of Pulis’ plans at Middlesbrough for much of the season. Yet he stayed to fight for a place. This determination and display of character shows an inner strength that underlies his skills. He would be a fine signing.
