Many Wigan Athletic supporters have been bemoaning the team selection from manager Paul Cook following their 2-1 defeat at home to Preston North End.

Wigan headed into the game on the back of back to back wins against Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United, which had given the Latics fresh optimism in their bid to get out of trouble and move themselves away from the relegation zone before the end of the season.

However, Cook’s side started off the game really slowly against Preston, with the visitors quickly gaining control of the game and doing most of the early attacking, with Wigan’s three man defence having difficulty handling the narrow front four from the visitors.

Preston’s bright start to the game was rewarded inside the 7th minute with Tom Barkhuizen tapping the ball home from close range after good work from Daniel Johnson, and the visitors controlled the rest of the first half, before swiftly doubling their lead through Johnson two minutes after half time.

Cook brought on Joe Gelhardt to give Wigan a lift and the 17-year-old’s performance did help to give the Latics more of an attacking threat, and the forward was instrumental in delivering the ball into the box which was eventually finished off by Chey Dunkley.

Despite putting some late pressure on Preston, though, Wigan were unable to force an equaliser and fell to a defeat which means they missed the chance to move out of the bottom three ahead of Stoke’s meeting with Charlton Athletic.
