Third choice goalkeeper Ryan Boot scored in the second half as Port Vale ran out 8-0 winners over North West Counties Premier League side Alsager Town.

Boot, who has been played on either flank in Vale’s first two friendlies, rose highest at the back post to convert Louis Dodds’ cross.

Micky Adams’ men took a 3-0 lead into the half time interval thanks to goals from new signings Ryan McGivern and Mark Marshall, as well as a Chris Lines penalty.

It was the fans’ first chance to see new signing Marshall, who signed a one-year deal with the Valiants after leaving fellow League One side Coventry City.

Marshall missed the opening pre-season friendly on Saturday when Port Vale were 6-0 winners against non-league neighbours Newcastle Town.

Vale included trialist Steven Jennings in the squad for the tie with the Bullets after he played 45 minutes in the last game against The Castle.

Adams made ten changes at the interval with only Ryan Lloyd staying on the field.

In the second half, trialists Javan Vidal and Sylvestre Guyonnet both had another chance to impress as the team added five more goals.

Former Manchester City defender Vidal has most recently played for Rochdale whilst French national Guyonnet has come from French fourth division side US Avranches.

The second half also gave three youth team players a chance to shine with Alex Morris, Omar Haughton and Johnathon Kapend all getting 45 minutes of play.

And it was Haughton who added Vale’s fourth when he was set up by trialist Guyonnet.

Tom Pope then added two goals for the Staffordshire side before the introduction of 19-year-old goalkeeper Boot.

After replacing Guyonnet on Saturday to play in a wide role, the shot stopper was again thrown outfield, this time replacing Lloyd.

And after his header made it 7-0, left back Morris smashed in the eight to complete the scoring.

That’s two wins in two for Adams’ men and they now face Norton United in their third friendly later today (July 15, KO 19:30).
