‘Gives nothing,’ ‘He has been awful’ – Player debate splits opinion among these West Brom fans

Some West Bromwich Albion fans have called on Slaven Bilic to drop Matt Phillips from the starting eleven.

The Baggies returned to winning ways at the weekend, beating Luton Town 2-0 at the Hawthorns.

An own goal from Donervon Daniels and a goal from Semi Ajayi ensured that Bilic’s side returned to the top of the Championship table and ended a run of seven league games without a victory.

Form since the 3-2 win over Birmingham in mid-December has been somewhat poor for West Brom and has seen the likes of Hal Robson-Kanu, Charlie Austin and Phillips all struggle to replicate their early season heroics.

Phillips who has featured no less than 27 times in the league this term, has seven goals and six assists, but his poor form has coincided with West Brom’s.

Bilic, who was busy over the January transfer window has brought in the likes of Callum Robinson from Sheffield United and Kamil Grosicki from Hull City, both of whom can occupy Phillips’ position on the right wing.

Whilst Phillips still has a lot to offer this season, the 28-year-old winger has barely been afforded a rest and calls have now been made by fans to hand him one.

West Brom face Millwall on Sunday, before meeting Reading the following midweek – meaning Phillips could be rested for one of those encounters.

One Baggies fan took to Facebook group The Real West Brom Fanzone to share his thoughts on Phillips and he started quite the debate by posting: “Phillips needs dropping.”

How many goals did James Morrison score for West Brom in his 309 appearances?

Below are just some of the fan opinions on the idea of dropping the former Blackpool winger:

Sue Lynn Babington: MOTM in the paper.

Paul Blakemore: Definitely mate, gives nothing, just one cross today and that was it.

Stewart Bell: He will be for the next match, we have about 10 wingers now don’t we lol

Jon D Newey: Superb cross for the second goal

Simon Ricketts: He had a decent game

Nathan Kilminster: None of the team has been perfect the last seven matches before yesterday, no point singling out a player who is usually top quality for us.

Gary Skidmore: When Diangana, Pereira and Grosicki are available, he will be on the bench. Not consistent enough

Sonja Poole: It is our defence who are sloppy, they let in stupid goals.

Tom Lohmus: Some fans need to be dropped

David Collins: I am actually a big fan of Phillips but yesterday – as the last two months – he has been awful.

Juan Carlos Moscoso: Superb cross for second, yes his delivery was awful, but we struggled apart from Robinson really. Can’t single him out like usual.
