Luton Town succumbed to their third defeat of the 2019/20 Championship campaign last night at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday with one player’s performance creating a great deal of debate on social media.
Signed for a club-record fee thought to be in the region of £1.34m (via BBC Sport) earlier this summer, Simon Sluga’s mixed start to life in England continued at Hillsborough.
Although the Croatian goalkeeper made a number of eye-catching saves against the Owls, it was his misjudgement in the second-half which ultimately played a role in Kadeem Harris’ goal for Lee Bullen’s side.
Keen to launch a Luton counter-attack, Sluga tried to roll the ball out to Ryan Tunnicliffe yet the midfielder was slow to react and thus was tackled by Jacob Murphy.
After picking up the ball on the edge of the area, the winger delivered a devilish cross to Steven Fletcher who duly set up Harris for Wednesday’s opener.
With Luton unable to deliver a response to going behind, the Owls secured the three points they needed to go top of the Championship standings.
Following Sluga’s latest display for Graeme Jones’ side, plenty of Luton fans took to Twitter to air their opinions on the 26-year-old.
Here are some of the best reactions from the club’s supporters…
Can everyone slating Sluga take note that he’s made 18 saves – most in the championship – and remember how often he’s actually kept us in games. He’s making small errors here & there but so’s the whole team and can see Shea/Stech doing the same too. Give him a break and back him

Too many mistakes from Sluga….

I'll keep backing him up because he looks like a decent keeper but Sluga needs to cut these stupid errors out quickly

I’ve been defending sluga that was his fault @LutonTown

There’s no defending Sluga on that one

Is Sluga the scapegoat for some general poor defensive displays, displays from favourites from last season?

I'm not convinced that goal is Sluga's fault. If that's the way we play, then players should be ready to receive the ball when he's got it. Defending left a lot to be desired too

If Sluga rolls that ball out like he did and the outfield player is paying attention. It’s seen as a fine bit of play. Easy to say it’s his fault.

Apart from the roll out I thought Sluga did ok tonight, though wasn’t asked too many questions by a poor side.

Anyone that says Sluga should be dropped for Shea either didnt follow Luton in league 1 or doesn't have a clue… Sluga is our best option

Given that his side can ill-afford any more errors due to the fact that they are currently in the Championship relegation zone, it will be intriguing to see whether Jones opts to stand by Sluga or decides instead to start James Shea against Barnsley on Saturday.
