The 2016/17 campaign is one to be forgotten about for Gillingham supporters as the club look to reinforce their squad for next season in Sky Bet League One, as Ady Pennock takes charge on a permanent basis.
They have already completed one acquisition this summer with the arrival of ex-Yeovil Town defender Alex Lacey becoming a Gills player last month, putting pen-to-paper on a two-year deal.
One player who should come to Priestfield during the transfer window is 25 year-old free agent Jack Payne, recently released by League Two Play-Off winners Blackpool, but was deemed surplus to requirements at Bloomfield Road.
Gillingham produced the defensive-minded midfielder from their youth academy, making his debut in 2008 as a 16-year-old and that led to feature in over 100 matches for the Kent-based outfit prior to switching for Peterborough United in 2013.
Payne would go on to be named captain of the Posh but that didn't last long as he was shipped out on loan to Leyton Orient for the 2015/16 season.
He subsequently signed a one-year contract at Blackpool last summer following the club's relegation to the fourth-tier, leading on to play in 35 games for the Tangerines, however, was not offered an extension.
Jack Payne hasn't quite hit the heights expected of him since departing Gillingham and there is no clear reason for that, but returning to the League One side may be beneficial to them and himself.
He knows the club and area, as well as being born in Gravesend which is relatively near the Medway towns - the midfield man may not strengthen the current squad but he would add more depth.
