The Gills are looking to add to their attack after the arrivals of Rory Donnelly and Ben Williamson earlier this summer, and now it looks like they have identified their next target, to help enhance their squad and aid a potential promotion push.

Ajose’s name was omitted from the new squad number list announced by Leeds on Friday, raising many questions among the fans on whether he had finally fell out of favour.

Earlier doubts were triggered when Rosler dropped him from the squad travelling on pre-season tour to Austria and Norway, before the Whites manager Uwe Rösler made it clear that the striker was not in his plans for the new season.

He told the Yorkshire Evening Post, “I spoke to Nicky before we went to our training camp. Nothing has changed.

“I feel I can’t guarantee him the playing time he probably wishes for and it’s better for both parties if Nicky tries to find himself a new club.

“He’s a great age, he’s a good footballer and there’s some interest in him. Unfortunately he will not play for us’’.

The 23-year-old striker arrived from Peterborough exactly a year ago. However, he failed to establish himself at Elland Road and played only three games in the league, and he was subsequently loaned out to Crewe Alexandra where he had better fortunes, scoring eight goals in 27 games.

But it seems that Ajose’s stint at United is coming to an end, particularly after the capture of Leicester City striker Chris Wood, who was tipped by the German manager to shine in the new season.
